What is a Battery Backup power unit?

A battery backup power unit is a device that plugs into your Optical Network Terminal(ONT) device that allows it to maintain voice service in the case of a power outage.

Why does my Home Voice service need battery backup power?

Fiber optic communications must have backup power at the customer premise to avoid service interruption.

To avoid interruption to your voice services, maintain 12 charged D-cell batteries for your backup unit (batteries not included).

Do I have to purchase a battery backup unit?

Alaska Communications offers you the option to purchase a backup battery unit – it is not required, though voice services will not function in a power outage situation without it.

How do I use the backup battery unit in the event of a power outage?

In the event of a power outage, install 12 D-cell batteries into the backup unit, and connect the power supply cable with the AC power wall unit. Plug the AC power unit into a wall outlet. Then, connect the second provided cable from your battery backup unit to your ONT device. (batteries not included)

Switch the alarm to ON and your unit will beep when it is nearing the end of battery life while in use.

How long will my service continue to work in the event of a power outage?

When stored properly and using 12 charged D-cell batteries, your home voice service will have up to 24 hours of standby power.

How should I store my backup battery unit?

The battery backup unit should be stored in a cool, dry place, with batteries kept separate from the device.

How can I test my battery backup unit?

To test your battery backup unit, follow the set-up instructions and press the “Test” button on the unit. The screen will display a battery icon which shows your level of charge.

Once tested, remove and store the batteries separately from the unit for maximum shelf life.

You should test your battery backup unit annually to be prepared in the event of a power outage.

Which services will continue to work with the backup battery unit?

Backup battery will only work for Home Voice service. Fax machines, health monitors, alarms, and elevator phones are not supported by battery backup.

What does the backup battery unit include?

Includes the battery backup unit, an AC wall unit, and two connector cables. This unit requires 12 D-cell batteries. (Batteries not included with the device).

How can I purchase a backup battery unit?

To purchase battery backup for $50, call 866-208-9506.
